  • Brainstorm three characteristics that a strong leader should have and why he or she should possess those characteristics.

  • Share your top characteristic with the class, and share why your group felt it was the most important.

Essay

It is October 19, 2031, and it is the 250th anniversary of the surrender of British forces at the Battle of Yorktown.  

You have been given the honor of writing a short essay for an online publication honoring the men and women who laid the foundation of our nation with their lives and sacrifice.  

In your article (250 words, 1.5 spacing, normal margins), focus on the specific sacrifices that were made to secure the independence of the new nation, and the specific characteristics that leaders such as Washington possessed.  Discuss why those characteristics are and were important.

The Specifics:

Your essay should follow the standard writing formula:

  • Thesis/introductory paragraph

    • Have an attention-grabber to start your article.

    • Introduce your arguments.

  • Body

    • Write at least 3 full-length paragraphs.  Start each paragraph with a topic sentence, and when possible, use a transition sentence at the end of each paragraph that leads into the next paragraph.

  • Conclusion
